Full flexibility in the operation of USB devices

Birkenfeld, January 10, 2014: The measurement technology specialist MCD from Birkenfeld presents its newest product, which many users have been waiting for: a switchable USB 2.0-Hub. The six downstream ports of the new hub can individually be switched on and off via a USB command. For the use of control system, a COM Object, command line or DLL / assembly interface is supplied. When in remote operation, the Hub can be remote-controlled with almost every programming language.  When switching off both the supply voltage (+5 V) and the data lines are separated via the semiconductor. Ideas for this product were inspired by MCD developers based on their day to day experiences, for example when USB devices presented problems for the PC boot process or "stuck" devices had to be reset. Energy savings by switching off unneeded devices is a great benefit, especially if they are only fed by the host. MCD CEO Bruno Hörter adds, "Because at MCD we take the subject of "Green Energy" very seriously, we have developed the USB-Hub-Module based on energy-saving technology."

The hub can be operated alone on the USB-Host (bus-powered) or be supplied by a 5 VDC power supply with at least 17 W output power or 3.3 A output current (self-powered).  A reverse polarity is not possible due to the automatic polarity adjustment. The hub detects the external power supply and automatically switches from bus to self-powered mode. The device protects the USB-Host from any potential feedback through the external power supply.

Connecting or disconnecting the external power supply resets the hub and switches off the ports one through four. Ports five and six remain on after the reset, which is beneficial if, for example, the keyboard, mouse or the likes are connected. LEDs indicate the switching status of the six ports. The hub automatically switches off overloaded USB ports and sends a notification to the USB-Host. The included MCD USB-HUB monitor allows convenient operation of the MCD USB-Hub.
